Release notes for Excito Bubba 2 software version 2.4.1

Postby johannes » 23 Mar 2012, 18:10

This is a new major upgrade. The upgrade is available only as an install image*.
The main purpose of this upgrade is to merge the Bubba 2 and B3 software. Hence, future updates for B3 will normally also be released for Bubba 2.

How to upgrade
Follow this guide.

New features and major changes
This update brings B2 to the software state of B3:
* Tor Router functionality (torproject.org)
* DLNA server (Mediatomb exchanged for MiniDLNA)
* WiFi stability greatly enhanced
* More recent Linux kernel (2.6.39)
* Debian update to Squeeze
* New backup user interface
* Sample photo album added from start (only for fresh installs)
* Support for more printer brands (including printer hotplugging)
* UPnP port opening in external routers
* Squeezecenter update to latest
* PNG support in photo album
* Spanish language (user contributed) added to user interface
* SMB Workgroup changed from EXCITO to WORKGROUP to increase windows compatibility
* Various bug fixes and general updates
* Future updates for B3 will now automatically also be available for B2

Known issues
Note: This only applies if you have a 2 TB HDD.
If you install this on a new disk, not previously used with Bubba 2, the installer will fail creating the swap partition if you are on a 2 TB disk. Your system will work but may behave errouneously under heavy load. Workarounds:
    1. If you have a disk previously used with Bubba 2, install using either using the instructions under "What if I want to keep my data", or at least set the flag PARTITION=0. The correct partitions are there on your Bubba 2 already.
    2. If you are installing on a new disk, you need to manually partition the disk before installing. Contact support for further instructions.

Note
You will no longer reach your B2 using http://bubba. The hostname is by default set to 'b2'. This can easilly be changed if you wish.
* The easyfind domain is changed to myownb2.com. Hence you will need to register a new name on that domain.

*) Upgrading from previous release candidates
You can upgrade from earlier released 2.4-RC1, RC2, RC3 to this stable release using the web updater. However, make sure that the sources point to our 'elvin' repository. You can ensure this by issuing:
Code: Select all
change_distribution elvin -u
on the command line before updating.
It is not easy to upgrade from the previous 2.0.x release without re-installing. This operation is for Linux-people only, but be warned, it is not a 10-minute operation.

bubba-backend is still uninstallable on b2, because it depends on bubba3-kernel:

Code: Select all
# aptitude install bubba-backend
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  bubba3-kernel{ab} gdisk{a} logitechmediaserver{ab}
The following packages will be upgraded:
  bubba-backend{b}
1 packages upgraded, 3 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 36.8 MB of archives. After unpacking 97.2 MB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  bubba3-kernel: Conflicts: bubba-kernel but 1:2.6.39.4-4 is installed.
                 Conflicts: bubba-modules but it is not going to be installed.
  logitechmediaserver: Conflicts: squeezecenter but 7.6.1.dfsg1-2 is installed.
  bubba-backend: Conflicts: mt-daapd but 1:0.9~r1696.dfsg-12ex11 is installed.
  bubba-kernel: Conflicts: bubba-modules but it is not going to be installed.

I meant "installable", rather than "uninstallable".

I think you should add this as a work around also creating a swap file

Hi there,

I would like to upgrade B2 to 2.4.1. I have an additional bubba disk attached in RAID. According to the instructions provided I should disconnect the disk during the installation procedure. What will happen after I have upgraded B2 (I will not format or partition as I want to keep my data) and reattach the external disk? Will it resync in RAID?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Kind regards,

Kees

After upgrading B2 to 2.4.1 everything work as expected.
Which is sooo cool. :D
I was kind of unhappy about how long we must wait for this.
But after all - it's here and it works.

Thanx Excito

I have changed the bubba.cfg as described to keep the partitions and not format the disk.
I have an external disk in the RAID array.
Would you explain how to handle this, please.

1. Disconnect the external disc during upgrade or not?
2. If the external disc should be disconnected how to proceed? Should I manually format the external disc or is this handled when creating the RAID array.

Thanks
Håkan

Hi Håkan,

I asked a question in he same vein as your question. As I did not get a reply I decided to take the plunge and trust my instincts. This is what I did:

1. unplug the external disk (which I assume you have in RAID1)
2. format and partition the main server (you don't have to keep the contents of /home, you will restore that when connecting your RAID1 disk)
3. when all is done, reconnect your external RAID-disk, go into the Bubba frontend and 'restore disk' by selecting the external drive. This will take several hours but in my case the contents were restored as desired.

Result: newly installed / upgrade B2/B3 including the contents of /home.

Success!

Regards,

Kees

Users that have the wireles versin of the Bubba and uses it as an access client rather then an AP should be aware that this has been broken in this upgrade of the kernel so you need to compile your own kernel to make it work. It is the wext (Wireless Extensions for Linux) that is missing in this kernel. Se this post for more information viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3791#p19727. It would be nice if the wext support was added in the next kernel release Excito does if it does not interfere with the stability when using Bubba as an AP.

I've now tried several times to install the upgrade on my B2, but the led just keeps blinking at 2hz. Also the USB only shows the led having power and no activity.

I formatted the usb for fat32 and copied the install folder to the root.

Is there anything I missed, why it is not installing?

I installed this version on 1.5TB hard disk and the installer did not create a swap partition. It looks like the a 1.5TB has the same problem as 2TB. Can you please let me know the workaround? The system is running now but no swap partition. By issuing at a cat /proc/meminfo command, i verified that no swap was created.
